The islands were discovered on 9 February 1839 by Captain John Balleny of the Eliza Scott, one of Enderby's captains who had been sent out on an exploring mission. The islands were named in his honour by Captain Beaufort, hydrographer to the Admiralty.
Description
A group of small islands of glaciated volcanic formation, lying about 150 miles north of the Antartic Continent.
