Aranga Hut Ruahine Forest Park A four bunk hut (two still usable) that left DOC hands in a treaty settlement some years ago, owing to its position a few meters the wrong side of a line someone drew on a map. The hut has since deteriorated - the woodburner was removed a few years ago, and the former fireplace fell away from the hut in 2011, leaving a gaping hole. This has since been patched roughly, but the hut is barely weathertight (the roof is ok, but the walls leak) and really just an emergency shelter at this point. A sad state for what was a good functional hut in 2006.

Back Basin Hide Craigieburn Forest Park An old animal study hide built in 1974 to study chamois in the area. This is a 2 bunk bivvy adapted for its purpose with slide-open slit windows, shutters and a high bench below each. There is a small water tank (battered to near destruction by kea) and a short-drop (shovel provided) toilet. The 2 bunks have no mattresses and there is no fire. The hut is seldom visited - going 5 years at one point between the last chamois survey and the first visit (Honara and Frank) with no visitors. It is a tough place to get to, but the views of the ranges opposite are wonderful, as is the history, isolation and basic functionality of the place. 3 routes exist up from Basin Creek - up the chute (creek) below the hut. Up the avalanche path 1km east or from Chamois Creek via pt 1647. An old marked track also heads down from the biv, but becomes lost lower down. Basic Hut/bivvy

Back Ridge Hut Kaweka Forest Park A standard 4-bunk forestry hut in the Kaweka Range. Situated in a tongue of beech beside a small stream, right on the bushedge - this is a sheltered but relatively high altitude hut. The hut features an enclosed woodburner and water from the stream. As with all Kaweka huts it is popular with hunters, especially during the sika roar, in April-May.

Boil the Billy Hut Mt Alta Conservation Area A basic A-frame bivvy in the upper Minaret Burn. On DOC land but not actively maintained by DOC. The biv has a sleeping platform with room for 2-3 people, though water damage on the north side makes it better for 1-2 at present (2019). A bench and fold-down table complete the furnishings. Water is from a creek 20m away. There is no toilet (or shovel) and no mattresses. The biv currently (2019) needs some TLC - a leaking laser-light panel on the north wall is letting water in and causing rapid deterioration of the hut structure. A new window pane is needed for the west wall - this has been boarded up in the interim but is also letting in some water. Rotten sections of bunk and flooring also need replqcing, along with a small section of bottom plate. A good project for someone ....
